Anthrax is a thrash metal band formed in New York in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Danny Lilker (who left the band in 1984 to form Nuclear Assault). They were one of the most popular bands of the 1980s thrash metal scene, and along with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer, they have been credited as the "big four" of that genre. Anthrax is also notable for being one of the early underground metal bands to sign to a major label (Island Records, in 1985). The band has sold over 2.5 million records in the U.S since the beginning of the SoundScan era, and more than 15 million records worldwide.
